Pennant Season 2019-2020 Round 3
PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB – 2019/20 PENNANT – ROUND THREE
Pakenham’s weekend bowlers were back in wet weather/winter gear on Saturday while the Midweek Warriors enjoyed much milder conditions.
SATURDAY
Pakenham One (Div 1) took the scenic drive to Yarra Glen where they enjoyed a rare and very sweet victory on what has notoriously been a grave yard for visiting sides. With one rink dominant and two others level pegging, the Lions established an early lead and by the half way mark, at 46/24, had almost doubled their opponents score. After the break (the ham and salad rolls were excellent by the way) Pakenham maintained the pressure and still held a handy lead as they entered the business ends of the game. They then powered home to win by 27 shots (88/61) and collected 14 Pennant points. Best rink with a massive 27/7 was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Stephen (Krusty) Bentley (3), Keith (Emmsy) Emms (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L). The two losing rinks went down by only two and three shots respectively. They will be at home against Croydon in round four – this game will hold a lot of interest as Croydon now includes two young skippers formerly from Pakenham who have recently been racking up good results – bring it on!
Pakenham Two (Div 2) were at home to Glen Waverley One. The Lions were travelling well early in the piece and with three rinks up jumped to a good lead. However by the mid point of the game they had fallen behind and with one rink being savagely mauled, there was some cause for concern. Unfortunately that pattern continued and by the end of play, despite having two winning rinks, Pakenham lost overall by 15 shots (74/89.) Best rink with 22/18 was Jim Barrie (S), (Stormin’) Norm Box (3), Trent (Rowdy) Bedford (2) and Jennifer Bainbridge (L). The Two’s play Edithvale One away next round.
With two rinks up and two down, the Div 4 Pakenham Threes shared the points (away) with Hampton Park Two. They trailed in the early stages but ground away to have the scores level at 35 apiece at the half way mark. The game then ebbed and flowed to a full time score of 73 all. Best rink with 28/13 was Bill Bosch (S), Jan Moore (3), Ave Jones (2) and Eric Peterson (L) – they won the first five ends on the trot then another six in a row after half time. The threes will be at home to Mulgrave Country Club next Saturday.
Pakenham Four (Div 5) were at home to Carrum Two. The visitors took a liking to the Pakenham green and soon established a small early lead which they continued to build on as the game progressed, to the point where they were 22 shots up overall as the business ends commenced. The home side fought back hard from that point but although the margin was reduced to only nine shots, it was a case of too little too late. Their only winning rink with 26/9 was Graham Epps (S), John Lindley (3), Judith Ferrari (2) and Ray Wood (L). They play Keysborough Three away next round.
MIDWEEK
Pakenham One (Div 1) had a good win at home against Mordialloc One. The visitors leapt out of the blocks to lead early in the game but the Lions kept at it and by the half way mark with one up, one down and the other all square, had pinched a narrow two shot lead. By the cessation of play they had two rinks up and won overall by 11 shots, 63/52 and the losing rink went down by only one shot. Best of the winners with 21/14 was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Terry (Tmac) McRedmond (3), Peter (Hacksaw) Bott (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L). They play Keysborough One away next round.
Unfortunately, it was very much the case of “the one that got away” for Pakenham Two (Div 2) in their away game against Hampton Park One. They were in front at all the important milestones in that match only to fall short at the final hurdle by a single shot. However with two of the three rinks up, they did at least collect four Pennant points. Best rink with 27/16 was Bill Bosch (S), Garry Pincott (3), Ken Clifton (2) and John Moore (L). They play Churchill Waverley Golf One next round.
Pakenham Three (Div 4) were never in the hunt at Edithvale and with all rinks down returned home with zero points from a 34/73 thrashing. The only highpoint of the match was the fight back by Allister Stewart’s rink who outscored their opponents nine shots to nil over the last five ends and with a final score of 15/21 were not disgraced. Hopefully the Threes will bounce back at home against Cranbourne RSL Three next round.
The Six-A-Side Fours were far too hospitable to Narre Warren Three and eventually gave them a 48/36 win with both home rinks going down. Graham Epps’ rink returned an interesting score card; they were 5/3 up after five ends, were outscored 15/1 over the next six then turned the tables to score 12/0 over the following five, to be 18 all at the sixteenth. They then lost the last five ends 5/8 to go down overall by only three shots, 23/26. The Fours are scheduled to play Willow Lodge away in round four.
HI-LO
Just for a change, the winner was Ray Illing and not Dave Wood, for round three. Ray had number three.
