Pennant Season 2019-2020 Round 2

PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB – PENNANT 2019/20 – ROUND TWO

SATURDAY

After their good win against the fancied Croydon club last week, Armadale’s Div One side were cock-a-hoop when they arrived at Pakenham on Saturday and fully expected to pick up another scalp at the expense of the Lions.  However that was not to be.  From early in the game one of Pakenham’s rinks was clearly dominant while the other three were locked in a close tussle; by afternoon tea the locals were well ahead on two rinks and held a good overall lead of 44/26.

However, as is often the case, by the time play resumed after the break, conditions had changed somewhat and with a number of Armadale’s players adapting more quickly than a few of the locals, they began to make inroads into the lead.  In fact, after a particularly wayward end by “Grizzly” Leigh the coach remarked in his broad Scottish accent, “I’ve nae seen two bowls so far apart since I accidently left one at home!”  Nevertheless, the Lions held on to secure an eight shot win, 82/74 and collected 14 valuable Pennant points.  Best rink with 27/17 and outscoring the visitors 10 shots to two in the last five ends, was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Stephen (Krusty) Bentley (3), Keith (Emmsy) Emms (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L).   The One’s will be at Yarra Glen for round three.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) spent a sunny afternoon down by the bay where they played Carrum’s top side.  The Lions struggled a little in the early stages of that game but by the half way point were looking strong and only one shot in arrears.  They continued the momentum after the break to run out 12 shot winners with an overall score of 90/78.  Best rink with 36/19 (and outscoring their opponents 19/5 in the second half) was Chris Fox (S), Jim Williams (3), Garry Pincott (2) and Val Moore (L).  The Twos will play Glen Waverley One at home next round.

Pakenham Three (Div 4) did not have such a good afternoon at home to Narre Warren Two.  They struggled from the outset and despite having two rinks up at various stages of the game they were eventually beaten 78/96 with one rink winning 21/20 and another drawn at 23/23.  The winners were John Tarr (S), (Razor) Ray Pigdon (3), Lois Mashado (2) and Peter Wilson (L).  They will meet Hampton Park Two, away, next round – hopefully for a better result.

The Div 5 Pakenham Four played away against Noble Park Two.  Their score looked promising early in the game; however the worrying aspect was that only one rink seemed to have the measure of their opponents while the other three trailed behind.  By the half way point their brief lead had evaporated and they were down overall by 10 shots.  That trend continued and by the end of play, despite having two rinks up, they lost overall with a score of 61/80.  Best rink with a healthy 25/12, was Peter Powney (S), Alan Waterson (3), Rick Burns (2) and Joan Montgomery (L).   They will be at home to Carrum Two next round.

MIDWEEK

The Midweek players were back into cold weather attire last Tuesday.  Pakenham One (Div 1) secured a good 14 point victory at home against the “old enemy” Berwick.  They were in trouble after 15 ends but dug deep and by the half way mark had turned the game around to be ahead by three shots.  From that point on it was nip and tuck with the Lions eventually adding only two more shots to their lead to win a low scoring game by just 57/52 overall.  Best rink with 20/13 was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Terry (Tmac) McRedmond (3), Peter (Hacksaw) Bott (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L).  The Ones have the luxury of another home game next round – their opponents will be Mordialloc One.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) made it two in a row, picking up another win in round two at Keysborough.  The twos were never in trouble at any stage of the game although after establishing a good early lead of 12 shots, it was odd that they did not build on it – they were still 12 shots up at the half way mark, again at the start of the business ends of the game and also at the completion of play (65/53).  Still, with wins on all three rinks, they banked the maximum of 16 Pennant points.  Best rink with 23/15 was Jim Barrie (S), David Moore (3), Ave Jones (2) and Luis Aguilar (L).  They travel to Hampton Park for round three.

Also at home and sharing the top green with the Ones, Pakenham Three (Div 4) struck a strong opponent in Noble Park Two.   With one rink clearly dominant, the visitors got the jump on the home side to establish a big lead early in the game, although the Lions fought back to reduce that to just one shot by the half way mark.  However from that point the visitors pulled away again and despite winning two rinks out of three, Pakenham went down by 11 shots, 52/63.  Best rink with 20/14 was Ray Illing (S), Roy Harvie (3), Vince Bevilaqua (2) and Helen Wright (L).  They play Edithvale Two, away, next round.

The Six-A-Side Fours made the short trip across town to Cardinia Waters where they jumped out of the blocks and with both rinks ahead, established a big early lead which they maintained until the half way mark.  From that point, one of the home rinks fought back to win a close game by just two shots.  However the Lions won well on the other rink (23/12) to record victory overall by nine shots.  The winners were Ray Leggett (S), Jan Stevenson (3) and John Siekman (L).  They will be at home to Narre Warren Three next round.

HI-LO

The winner for round two with number 17 was Dave Wood (again!)
