Pennant Season 2019-2020 Round 4

PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB – PENNANT ROUND FOUR – 2019/20 SEASON

With one shining exception, Pakenham Bowls Club results from round four of Pennant could, at best, be described as very ordinary.

SATURDAY

Pakenham One (Div 1) played host to Croydon in a game where the Lions played “catch up” bowls all afternoon.  Nevertheless, for more than half of the match, a win did not seem out of the question; however even a half hour break resulting from a mid afternoon hailstorm did not provide the Lions with the opportunity to regroup and change the direction of play.  Once hostilities were resumed, the visitors kept the hammer down to eventually grind out a comprehensive 97/60 victory – Pakenham’s only winning rink, with a score of 24/15, was Neil (Big Dev) Devlin (S), Des (Grizzly) Leigh (3), Dave Wood (2) and Peter (Hacksaw) Bott (L).  The Ones would expect a better result next round (home again) against Warburton.

The Twos (Div 2) had a similar experience at Edithvale.  They were only behind by a small margin at the half way point of their match but by the commencement of the business ends the deficit had grown to 25 shots.  It was all down hill from there and at 55/88 they eventually lost by 33 shots.  Again the Lions had only one winning rink – Peter Ellis (S), Gary (Crow) Crowley (3), Adrian (ATrain) Wheelan (2) and Sandra (Wildwoman) Wilde (L) with a score of 17/14.  Round five will see them on the grass at Mulgrave Country Club.

Showing a complete reversal of form and providing a much needed ray of sunshine, the Fourth Division Thirds absolutely anhilated their visitors from Mulgrave Country Club and with success on all four rinks, collected the maximum 18 Pennant points.  They led at all stages of the game to record a huge 107/49 win overall.  Best rink with 32/10 was Bill Bosch (S), Peter Wilson (3), Jan Moore (2) and Eric Peterson (L).  They must remember what winning tastes like and keep that momentum going at Cranbourne RSL next round.

Pakenham Four (Div 5) always trailled behind at Keysborough but were never out of the hunt; at the half way mark they were only nine shots down and even at the start of the business ends that had grown to only 12 shots.  However they were eventually beaten by 22 shots (68/90) and collected only two Pennant points.  The one winning rink with a healthy 20/14 score card was Peter Powney (S), Allister Stewart (3), Alan Wilcock (2) and Helen Wright (L).  They will be at home to Willow Lodge One next round.

MIDWEEK

They had their chances, but with one rink being demolished and the other two squandering early and mid game leads, the Div One side eventually lost big time at Keysborough, 49/92 – move on folks, nothing to see here, zero Pennant points, no more to be said!  Hopefully there will be a massive rebound next Tuesday, at home to Clayton.

Although they returned a similar result (ie zero Pennant points), Pakenham Two did not suffer a huge loss at home against Churchhill Waverley Golf; however they did let their opponents grab the early lead and never got their noses in front at any stage, eventually losing by 45/62.  They will have to lift their game next round at Burden Park.

Pakenham Three (Div 4) had a real crack at home against Cranbourne RSL Two.  The scores were close all day and at the half way mark it was the Lions who were in front, albeit by just six shots.  However they were run down by the end and at 53/56 eventually lost but only by three shots.  The one winning rink which provided the only highlight of the Midweek competition was Ave Jones (S), Jose Mazzarella (3), Peter Powney (2) and John Barlow (L) with 20/15.  The Threes will be at home to Willow Lodge next round.

The Six-A-Side Pakenham Four added to the tale of woe down the road at Willow Lodge.  They hung in there early in the piece but by the half way mark the contest was almost over.  In the end, at 22/49, the home side more than doubled the hapless Lions’ score.  They are in for another hard game next round, away again, this time at Clayton.

HI-LO

The winner for round four with number 34 was Peter Jones.
