Round 3 Pennant Report 2018/19

Pakenham Bowls Club – Pennant Round Three – 2018/19

SATURDAY

Pakenham One (Div 1) needed a win at home against Warburton on Saturday but at the half way mark, with two rinks up and two down and the Lions ahead by only five shots, the game could have gone either way.  However the rev-up by Coach Neil Devlin after the tea break had the desired affect; Pakenham pushed hard and eventually won by 21 shots, 88/67 and collected 14 valuable Pennant points.  Best rink with a 29/14 scorecard was Ryan (Rhino) Drummond (S), Des (Grizzly)Leigh (3), Chris Stubbings (2) and Stephen (Krusty) Bentley (L).  The Ones will be away at Berwick next round.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) suffered an unexpected loss at Churchill Waverley Golf.  The contest was neck and neck in the early stages and with half the game completed, both sides had two rinks up with the Lions holding a slender two shot lead overall.  However in a low scoring game the home side eventually ground out an 11 shot win, 63/74 and Pakenham came home with only one winning rink.   The winners with 19 shots to 12 were David Wood (S), Ryan Tebble (3), Kevin Murphy (2) and Kerry Lewis (L).  The Twos play Hampton Park at home in round four.

It’s a hard draw this season for Pakenham Three (Div 3) and things did not get any easier on the heavy greens at Mulgrave Country Club last Saturday.  With one rink haemorrhaging badly, they were up against it all afternoon and did well to salvage two winning rinks in an overall 62/76 loss.  Best rink was Charles Harris (S), Paul Walter (3), Sylvana Courtin (2) and Razor Ray Pigdon (L) with a 20/16 scorecard.  They face another test of character next round at home to the top of the ladder, Dandenong Club.

Joining the Ones at home, Pakenham Four (Div 6) also enjoyed a win.  They were never in trouble against Glen Waverley and eventually ran out clear winners by 31 shots, 91/60 with three rinks up.  Ironically, the one losing rink (which only went down by two shots) actually scored an elusive eight!  That rink was John Moore (S), Sam Granieri (3), David Moore (2) and Vincent Bevilacqua (L).  However the best of the winners was Peter Bott (S), Allister Stewart (3), Ken Clifton (2) and Ray Leggett (L) who dominated with a very impressive 25/9 score.   They play Chelsea away next round.

Meanwhile, down at Carrum, Pakenham Five (Div 7) were not exactly enjoying their day out by the sea side.   From the outset, the signs were not good and by half way through the game the home side had almost doubled the visitors’ score.  To their credit, the Lions matched their opponents during the second half of the game but unfortunately, by that stage, the damage had already been done.  The one winning rink for Pakenham with a tight 16/15 score card was Lindsay Stevenson (S), Eric Peterson (3), John Hickman (2) and John Barlow (L).  They play Berwick at home next round.

MIDWEEK

The First Division side hosted Mentone in another low scoring game (57/63) which saw the visitors walk away with a six shot victory.   The one high note for Pakenham was the incredible effort by the winning rink of Peter Gribbin (S), Gary Pincott (3), Brian Norton (2) and David Laird (L); they were down 1/8 after six ends but regrouped to claim 12 of the remaining 15 on their way to a 25/13 win.  They have another tough one next round, away at Mulgrave Country Club.

It was a case of “Currie and Co Carry Pakenham” in the Division Two side’s 59/50 win at Burden Park.  The rink of Paul Currie (S), Peter Bott (3), Kevin (Digger) Goonan (2) and Ken Clifton (L) were careless enough to let their opponents get one shot ahead at the sixth end but stung into action, they responded immediately with a six and were never headed for the rest of the match.  Their 27/11 score covered narrow losses by the other two rinks (two and five down respectively).  The Twos will be at home to Berwick next round.

Pakenham Three (Div 5) chalked up a big 76/43 result and collected maximum Pennant points at home against Carrum.  Two of Pakenham’s rinks were behind in the early stages but both fought back to win (23/15 and 23/20).  However the third rink of John Moore (S), Peter Powney (3), Darren Webster (2) and Sylvana Courtin had a day to remember – they had 20 shots on the board before their opponents had even opened their account and eventually cruised to a 30/8 demolition.  The Threes are top of the ladder and in what should be the game of the round, are away to second placed Churchill Waverley Golf next week.

The Six-A-Side Pakenham Four lost to Narre Warren (away) by 28 shots to 49.  One of the Lions’ rinks stayed with their opponents all day, eventually losing by only four shots but the other, unfortunately, was never in the hunt.  They would hope for a win next round, at home to Noble Park.

HI-LO

This week’s winner with number three was Rhino Drummond, again!
