Pennant Report Round 9 Season 2020/2021

PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB – PENNANT REPORT – ROUND 9 – SEASON 2020-21

SATURDAY

Pakenham One (Div 1) kicked off the first of three home games in a row with a close win over Parkdale, a team which had beaten them in the first half of the home and away season.  There was never very much in this game – after 20 ends the Lions had three rinks up and a good (at that stage) lead of six shots but when play was halted for the afternoon tea break (the ham rolls made a welcome return) with just 39 ends completed, the score was 39 all.  At the half way mark both sides had two rinks up, however Pakenham held a four shot lead and with the two teams trading blows from that point forward, the Lions held on to record a win by just two shots.   Best rink with 25/14 was Neil “Big Dev” Devlin (S), Ned Courtin (3), Gian Pianezzola (2) and Jennifer Bainbridge (L).

The Ones now sit in splendid isolation in fifth spot, more than a full round clear of Parkdale in sixth but also more than a round behind Upwey Tecoma in fourth.  They will host Mordialloc (seventh) next round.

Across town at Cardinia Waters, Pakenham Two (Div 3) lost one they could have won.  They got the jump on their hosts early in the game and after the first 20 ends held a slender three shot lead.  However by the half way mark, although both sides had two rinks up, it was Cardinia Waters which had its nose in front, at that stage by a margin of six shots.  After the break, the Lions managed to claw back the lead and at the start of the business ends were again in front, albeit by just three shots.  However in the run home they were outscored (other than on Paul Currie’s rink which held on for a draw) and eventually went down overall by 11 shots (78/89).  Pakenham’s only winning rink with 27/16 was John Tarr (S), Bill Bosch (3), Peter McQueen (2) and Val Moore (L).

The Twos Hold seventh spot on the ladder, now more than a full round behind Chelsea in sixth.  They face Berwick (third) under the McRedmond Laird Dome in round ten.

At home to Cockatoo’s number one side, Pakenham Three (Div 4) were never in the hunt and were well behind at all the significant milestones.  One positive feature of their game however, was that they outscored their opponents over the last 20 ends and came very close to collecting four Pennant points.  Two rinks which came home particularly strongly only to fall short by one shot were Ray Illing (S), Richard Burns (3), Jan Moore (2) and Kevin “Digger” Goonan (L) with 21/22 and Sam Granieri (S), Roger Platt (3), Alan Wilcock (2) and Kevin Holley (L) with 17/18.

The Threes will be away at Cranbourne (fourth) next Saturday.

The Six-A-Side Pakenham Four were at home to Mulgrave Country Club on Saturday morning.  After the first 10 ends of 30, that game was evenly balanced at 10 shots apiece and after 20 ends, when the score was 20/21, there was nothing in it again.  However the Lions were outscored in the home straight and eventually lost 25/32.  Their one winning rink with 16/12 was John Hickmann (S), John Lindley (2) and Helen Wright (L).

The Fours are now fourth on the ladder; they will be away at Willow Lodge (second) next round.

MIDWEEK

It was two wins in a row (hopefully the start of a habit) for Pakenham One (Div 2) who had a day out last Tuesday at the expense of the unfortunate Hampton Park.  The Lions led at all stages of the game and at 87/38 more than doubled their opponents’ score to complete a clean sweep and collect maximum Pennant points.  Best rink with 33/11 was Keith “Golden Arm” Archer (S), Glenn “Google” Bainbridge (3), Peter “Hacksaw” Bott (2) and Sandra “Wildwoman” Wilde (L).

The win elevated the Ones to fourth spot on the ladder.  They face a tough assignment next week, away at Edithvale (second).

Any win away is a good win but there was something special about Pakenham Two’s comeback down the road at Berwick last week.  Their hosts got the jump on them and after the first fifteen ends they were behind on all three rinks with the overall score at 8/18.  By the mid way point, despite having two rinks marginally in front they still lagged behind and at 23/36, the outlook was anything but promising.  Remarkably, with only fifteen ends left to play, they had pegged the margin back to two shots but again had two rinks down.  Then, in a wonderful display of team spirit, the Lions outscored their opponents in the run home to pull off a 14 point, 60/54 victory.

Best rink with 21/11 was Brian Norton (S), Gary “Crow” Crowley (3), Peter Wilson (2) and Jan Moore (L).  However the fightback of the season must be awarded to John Tarr (S), Bill Bosch (3), Adrian “ATrain” Wheelan (2) and Kevin “Digger” Goonan (L) – they were down ten zip after five ends and still behind 3/20 midway through the game but outscored their rivals 20/2 over the last 10 ends for an incredible 23/22 win!

The Twos have also moved up to the fourth rung of the ladder.  They will be home to Cranbourne RSL (third) next round.

Pakenham Three (Div 4) were never far away at Keysborough and actually held a one shot overall lead at the start of the business ends.  However they could not hang on long enough for that elusive win and at 51/58 eventually went down by seven shots.  Their one winning rink with 20/14 was Eric Peterson (S), Peter McQueen (3), Jan Stevenson (2) and David Saint (L).  They will have the home ground advantage over Churchhill Waverley Golf (sixth) next round.

HI-LO

The winner for round nine was “Ando/Lefty” with number 49.
