Round 1 Pennant Report 2018/19

PAKENHAM BOWLS CLUB – PENNANT REPORT – ROUND ONE

SATURDAY

The temperature may have been near freezing last Friday night but the competition was red hot as Pakenham One (Div 1) opened its Pennant season with a match under lights against former Premier Division side Mentone.   Even during the initial roll-up, it was obvious that the Lions were going to have their hands full containing the visitors who quickly adapted to the local surface and helped themselves to an early lead.   Pakenham played catch up bowls for the rest of the night and despite a late fight back were unable to turn the game around – Mentone were just too good.

The final result was a score of 63 shots to 84 with only one Lions’ rink getting up.  That was Neil Devlin (S), Chris Fox (3), David Laird (2) and Terrence Sullivan (L) with a score of 18/17.  The One’s play Burden Park away, in round two.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) were just down the road at Berwick, unfortunately for a similar outcome.   In the early stages of the game, the Lions were well in it but by the half way mark had only one rink up and were down by 17 shots overall.   From there on they matched Berwick but were unable to make any inroads into the deficit and the situation at the end was the same as the half time score; i.e. one rink up and 17 shots down.   The one winning rink was John Tarr (S), Ryan Tebble (3), Roger Till (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L) with a score of 20/13.  The Two’s will be at home to Cranbourne (1) next round.

For Pakenham Three (Div 3), playing Narre Warren’s top side away was always going to be a tough assignment; nevertheless, at the completion of play, two of Pakenham’s rinks fell short by just one shot, but the other two unfortunately, were well beaten.  The final result was a loss of 71 shots to 94 and zero pennant points in the bank.  The Three’s will host Noble Park in round two.

The only team at home on Saturday and the only team to score a win was Pakenham Four (Div 6) who played Upwey Tecoma Three.   The Lions had a strangle hold  on their opponents by the half way mark and despite taking their foot off the gas in the later stages still coasted to a comfortable  93 to 65 win with three rinks up, one drawn and 17 of the available 18 Pennant points in the bank.  Best rink with a score of 27 to 11 was Peter Bott (S), Paul Walter (3), Ray Leggett (2) and John Moore (L).   The Fours have a tough game away at Carrum next round.

With four of their 16 members missing (that’s at least 168 fewer bowls than were available to their opponents), Pakenham Five (Div 7) were in trouble on Saturday even before they left home for the short trip across town to Cardinia Waters where they had a day they would rather forget, losing all four rinks by a total of 100 shots. Hopefully they will have a full team available for their next game – at home to Narre Warren Four.

MIDWEEK

Although one rink got away to a slow start, Pakenham One (Div 1) quickly stamped their authority on the game against Berwick at home last Tuesday.  By the half way mark, at 40 shots to 20, they had doubled their opponent’s score and by the end of play won with all rinks up and a final score of 71/38.  Best rink was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Keith Lewis (3), Terry (TMac) McRedmond (2) and Kerry Lewis (L) with a score of 25/10.  The Ones play Heathmont, away, next round.

The Two’s (Div 2) put up quite a fight at Edithvale but eventually returned home with zero Pennant points, having experienced a loss across all rinks by 73 shots to 44.   They play Cardinia Waters at home next round.

Pakenham Three (Div 5) also played Edithvale (at home) but for an entirely different outcome.  By the half way mark they had all three rinks up, with the score board showing 39 shots to 27 and by the end of the game had doubled their opponents’score, 80/40,  banking maximum Pennant points in the process.  Best rink was Bill Bosch (S), David Moore (3), Peter Wilson (2) and Lavinia Moss (L) with a score of 32/9.  The Three’s play Edithvale again (this time their fifth side) away next round.

The Six-A-Side Pakenham Four were comprehensively beaten 25 shots to 55 at Cranbourne.  They have a bye next round.
