Pennant Season 2019-20 Round 1

Round 1

The 2019/20 Pennant season commenced on Tuesday 1 October with four teams from Pakenham Bowls Club competing in the Midweek competition and a further four in action in Weekend Pennant on October 5.

SATURDAY

As a result of the departure of a number of players and with good performers from lower divisions pushing for selection, the composition of the Div 1 side which travelled to Beaumaris was a little different to last year’s lineup and it was apparent that a bit of settling in will be required (hopefully a quick process).  On three of the four rinks, the locals got the jump on the Lions to establish a 15 shot lead early in the game and that was still the margin at the half way mark.  From that point onwards, Pakenham fought back hard to win two rinks and draw a third however they were badly mauled on the fourth and eventually lost overall by 12 shots.  Best rink with a score of 18/11 was Neil Devlin (S), Des (Grizzly) Leigh (3), Dave Wood (2) and Peter Bott (L).  The Ones will be at home to Armadale One in round two.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) were at home to Hampton Park 1 (recently relegated from Div 1).   Their game was evenly balanced in the early stages, but by the half way mark the home side had established a 10 shot overall lead.  However at the commencement of the business ends, that lead had been whittled back to one shot, which coincidentally was the Lions’ eventual winning margin.  Their’s was a strangely lopsided score board with one rink recording a big win, one being thumped and the other two being extremely close.  Best of the winners with 32/14 was Paul Currie (S), David Laird (3), Brian Norton (2) and John Moore (L).  The Twos will be bayside at Carrum next round.

It was anticipated that Pakenham Three might have been more competitive in Fourth Div but that was not the case at the Dandenong Club last Saturday.  Although one rink had a big win and another put up a great fight to get home by two shots, the other two were badly beaten and overall the team was never really in the hunt, eventually losing 63/96.  Best rink with a score of 33/7 and winning nine of the last ten ends, was David Moore (S), Trent (Rowdy) Bedford (3) Luis Aguilar (2) and Jan Moore (L).  They will be at home to Narre Warren for round two.

Despite being the visitors, Berwick (7) jumped Pakenham Four (Div 5) to establish a 16 shot lead early in their contest, although by the half way mark that margin had been reduced to just eight shots. However from that point the visitors applied the pressure and with wins on three rinks out of four eventually defeated the Lions by 85 shots to 62.  With a score of 21/16, Pakenham’s only winning rink was Ray Leggett (S), Sam Granieri (3), Vince Bevilaqua (2) and John Barlow (L).

MIDWEEK

The Midweek teams produced a mixed bag with two wins and two losses.

Pakenham One (Div 1) travelled to the (once) powerful Mulgrave Country Club which appears to have become a little vulnerable of late; however it obviously did not field a weakened side last Tuesday.  The Lions had their hands full from the outset and although they were only five shots behind at the half way mark, with two rinks being badly beaten, eventually went down overall by 46 shots to 60.  The only winning rink with a score of 22/10 was Keith (Golden Arm) Archer (S), Terry (Tmac) McRedmond (3), Peter Bott (2) and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde (L) – at one stage they won 12 ends on the trot!  The Ones will be at home to Berwick in round two.

Pakenham Two (Div 2) started the season with a good win against Cranbourne One at home.  They established a decent lead early in the game and were still well ahead at the half way mark.  From that point one rink struggled a little but it was more than covered by the other two, the Lions running out eventual winners by 72 shots to 51.  Best rink with 32/10 and outscoring their opponents by 14 shots to four on the way home was Jim Barrie (S), Ian (Lefty) Anderson (3), Ave Jones (2) and Luis Aguilar (L).  They will be away at Keysborough for round two.

The Div 4 Thirds had a very satisfying day at Keysborough, picking up maximum points with wins on all three rinks.  That game was evenly poised until the half way point with only four shots in it at that stage.  However with the dominant rink winning eight of the last ten ends and outscoring their opponents 14/2 in the process, the Lions ran out easy winners with an overall score of 65/40.  Best rink with a score of 25/8 was Allister Stewart (S), Alan Waterson (3), Peter Powney (2) and Jan Moore (L).  They are at home to Noble Park for round two.

The Six-A-Side Pakenham Four struggled all day with the visitors from Noble Park, eventually going down on both rinks by 29 shots to 47.  Craig Cameron (S) Ian Kitt (3) and Elaine Butler (L) had a great battle with the scores being level four times during the match – unfortunately however, they eventually lost by just two shots.  They have a short trip across town to Cardinia Waters next round.

HI-LO

Dave wood with number 17, was the winner of the HI-LO for round one.
